The arms are those of Yorke impaling Cocks for Philip, Baron Hardwicke, later 1st Earl of Hardwicke (b.1690, d. ) and his wife Margaret, daughter of Charles Cox of Worcester whom he married on 16 May 1719. He became Baron Hardwicke on 23 November 1733 and was elevated to the Earldom on 2 April 1754. He was appointed in 1746 Lord High Steward of England and was one of the Lords Justices for the administration of the Government during the King's absence in 1740, 1748 and 1752. He is said to have been avaricious and it is certain that he appreciated wealth at its full value; but, though he amassed an immense fortune no suspicion of corruption ever sullied his fair
