A PAIR OF EARLY GEORGE II GILT-GESSO SIDE TABLES
Each with later rectangular breche violette marble top above a curved frieze centred by a quatrefoil flowerhead on a pounced ground flanked by engraved trellis panels, with flared apron carved with stylised strapwork, on cabriole legs headed by foliage-bound acanthus carving on a pounced ground, the back of the legs with engraved trellis, on splayed square feet, one frame 2in. (5cm.) narrower, both with paper label inscribed in ink FRONT HALL, the marbles with very slight difference in thickness

Probably supplied to 2nd Earl Cowper (b.1709) for Coles Green, Hertfordshire, the house bought by the 1st Earl in 1720
