Lot Essay

The present relief is part of a popular series of reliefs after a lost original by Benedetto da Maiano. Versions exist both in terracotta and in stucco, but it is not clear whether these depend from a marble prototype. There seems, however, to be little doubt that the design was one of Benedetto's, and its conception appears to be close in date to his Virgin and Child on the Strozzi Monument in Santa Maria Novella, Florence, circa 1491.
A polychrome and gilt terracotta version is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, as is a polychrome stucco version. Other versions are in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin; the Delmar Collection, Budapest and Tolentino Collection, New York.
