Lot Essay

The Hellenistic Apollo Sauroctonus, formerly in the Borghese Collection, is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. During the 18th Century, particularly thanks to Winckelmann's enthusiasm for the figure, the Apollo became popular. Bronze reductions were made at this time for the Grand Tourists. The present bronze example is probably one of these, and varies from the marble in some details, particularly in the position of Apollo.
