A closely related top of circa 1870-1790, attributable to the Roman pietra dura workshops, is in the Galleria Palatina of the Palazzo Pitti (is illustrated in U. Baldini et al., La Cappella dei Principi e le Pietre Dure, Milan, 1979, illus. 69 and 70). The Pitti top is recorded with its pair in the inventories of 1791. The second top is not listed in the next inventory of 1802, and it is presumed that this disappeared in 1799 during the French invasions. A further closely related top of the late 18th Century was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 22 May 1987, lot 61
