Lot Essay

Giovanni Beltrami (1777-1854), gem engraver, was born in Cremona where his father was a jeweller. He trained under Giovanni Pichler, and his talent for gem engraving led to widespread commissions including portraits of the King of Bavaria and Francis I of Austria. He also worked for Eugene Beauharnais (see Forrer, Biographical Dictionary of Medallists). A banded
agate intaglio by him is in the British Museum (cf. H. Tait ed. 'The Art of the Jeweller', The Hull Grundy Gift to the British Museum (1984) no.846
