Lot Essay

The present work is based on a lost prototype by Sofonisba Anguissola burnt in the fire of 1604 in the Galeria de Retratos of the Palace of El Pardo. The portrait was a well-known and popular image of the Queen and was much copied by subsequent artists such as Coello and Anthonis Mor. The best known version is that by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, court painter to Philip II, in the Prado Museum, Madrid.
