A version of the present picture (known from a photograph in the Witt Library, London) shows the Saint attempting to pluck an arrow from his neck with his right hand. This appears to have been omitted or painted out in the present work, although the figure remains in exactly the same attitude tied to the tree. The treatment of the nude figure is comparable with Brenet's picture of Endymion endormi, datable to 1756, at the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, Massachusetts (see C. Bailey, in the catalogue of the exhibition Les amours des dieux, Paris, 1991, p. 397, fig. 5).
