Lot Essay

While believing in the authenticity of the date on the present picture, Professor Sumowski suggests that it is painted in the style of the 1640s and points out that it combines the influences of Rembrandt and Rubens. Rembrandt's painting of the same subject which formed part of the Passion cycle executed for the Princes of Orange and is now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (see, for instance, K. Bauch, Rembrandt Gemälde, 1966, p.57 and p.4) was clearly Koninck's main source of inspiration, but he also reveals a knowledge of Rubens's picture in Antwerp Cathedral, particularly in the main group and the still life detail in front of it. A similar gilt platter is depicted in Koninck's 'Idolatry of Solomon' of 1644 in the Rijksmuseum (Sumowski, op. cit., colour illustration p.1658)
