Jean-Jacques de Gault specialised in painting grisaille miniatures à bas relief. He appears to have been born in 1738 and worked as a painter at the Sèvres porcelain factory from 1758 until 1760. In 1777 he exhibited four paintings imitating cameos at the Academie de St. Luc and subsequently exhibited similar works at the Salon de la Correspondence. It is clear from documents at Sèvres that he was still alive in 1812 but the date of his death is not known. He is frequently confused with Pierre-Marie de Gault, an undistinguished painter and no relation to Jean-Jacques de Gault
