Lot Essay

Lady Rachel Cavendish was born on 22nd January 1902, the 4th daughter of the 9th Duke of Devonshire and his wife Evelyn. In reference to the two portraits, the Duchess of Devonshire writes to her husband in a letter dated 3 May 1923: "He [de Laszlo] has offered to do James as a wedding present. He says he has seldom seen a face which attracts him so much -'not only his beauty of feature - but so sympathique' he says. I think James would like a sketch of her more than anything else. It ought to be done soon, as otherwise it will be like Blanche's - never done.". Lady Rachel was awarded the O.B.E. in 1946 for her work running canteens and clubs for the Commonwealth troops in the war. She died in 1977.

We are very grateful to The Hon. Mrs. de Laszlo for her assistance in cataloguing this work.
