the oval basket with a reeded rim above an openwork foliate scroll, swag and urn motif pierced border, raised on a conforming skirt foot and with an overhead reeded handle - 40.3cm (15 7/8 in), 27.5 oz.

Lot Essay

A cake basket of the same year by Hester Bateman is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, and is illustrated on page 97 of Women Silversmiths 1685-1845 by Philippa Glanville and Jennifer Faulds Goldborough.
Another example of 1789 was sold in these rooms on 28 March 2000, lot 75.
