Two Earthenware Teabowls
Raku Style, Meiji Period (late 19th Century), Each with Impressed Mark Raku
The black bowl set on a low ring foot with slightly incurving sides covered in a thick black glaze running thin in places on the sides and showing reddish-brown in patches; the red bowl set on a low ring foot with straight sides and covered in a creamy red mottled glaze with green hues, the interior with olive green patches, surface crackle
Black bowl 4 1/8in. (10.8cm.) diameter, 3 1/4in. (8.3cm.) high; red bowl 4 1/4in. (10.3cm.) diameter, 3 1/4in. (8.3cm.) high
In wood box inscribed Judai Tannyu tsukuru, and bearing seal Raku and titled Aka kuro chawan (Red and black tea bowls) and on the underside of the lid Kanoe-tatsu doshi hazuki (eighth month) and with signature of inscriber (2)
