Lot Essay

Kakurezaki does not confine himself to strictly conventional shapes for flasks or teapots, nor does he adhere unwaveringly to his Momoyama-period Bizen sources of inspiration. He has said that he does not wish to create classical forms with modern materials. On this small figure-like sake flask the unglazed, high-fired surface exhibits enormous variation in color and texture, and a whimsical "personality" unknown in earlier periods.

The potter left a long apprenticeship with Isezaki Jun (b. 1936) around 1985 to establish his own kiln in Okayama Prefecture.
