Known for his exquisite glazes, Kano Mitsuo's caramel-colored glaze (ame-yu) on this set of dishes is applied in varying thicknesses, producing butterscotch and ochre tones which are, in turn, crossed by five spoon-shaped forms in a graphic, repeating pattern. The tiger-striped design and Year of the Tiger (1962) date are a clever pun.
Kano Mitsuo studied under Komori Shinobu (1889-1962) and at the Kyoto City Pottery Research School. His work is represented in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. He won the Ministry of Education Grand Prize in 1998.
