Lot Essay

There are two letters from Edward Bawden dated 6 April 1947 and 4 Feb. 1948 to E.M. Paterson on the reverse. In the 1948 letter Bawden describes the present work: 'It was painted at Llangenwith last October only a few yards from the pub where I was staying - a very good place for food, by the way, if you ever feel you would like a daily dollop of real cream. John Nash ought by rights to be in the picture, just his head & shoulders sticking out of the bracken in the middle distance. We both struggled rather miserably to paint bracken, for which accomplishment as Essex men we don't get nearly enough practice. The present drawing of mine was a third, despairing effort: I hope the toil & labour does not noticably obtrude'.
