Lot Essay

A portrait of Mrs. Harmsworth, née Geraldine Mary Maffett (1838-1935), who married Alfred Harmsworth (1837-1889), a barrister at the Middle Temple on 21 September 1864. The present portrait was commissioned by her eldest son, Viscount Northcliffe the newspaper proprietor in 1913 wearing the brooch traditionally worn by the ladies of the Harmsworth family on their wedding day.
