Epstein met Betty Peters during the 1930s and she is the subject of an important portrait from 1939 as well as a series of nude studies in 1943. R. Buckle (Jacob Epstein Sculptor, London, 1963, no.428-37) records that eighteen nude pieces were cast for the Leicester Galleries Exhibition in 1947, however, only studies A-J are included in his monograph and in E. Silber's catalogue raisonné (The Sculpture of Epstein, Oxford, 1986, nos.341-45, 348-51).
