Lot Essay
This serving-table with reeded legs terminating in lotus leaf capitals relates to an Egyptian sideboard engraved in 1804 by George Smith, Upholstered to George, Prince of Wales, later King George IV, and published in his, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, pl. 92. Smith considered this style as 'Proper for Dining Rooms', and it was adopted by firms such as Gillows of London and Lancaster during the following decade. Designs for a related sideboard appear in the firm's sketch books at the Westminster Public Library, E.S. 2085 September 1818, and E.S. 3019, June 1821
