Lot Essay

The trade label of Coxed and Woster appears on a number of bureau-cabinets veneered with stained burr elm in imitation of mulberry and inlaid with pewter (for example, one illustrated in R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev.ed., 1954, vol.1, p. 138, fig. 33). G. Coxed and Thomas Woster are recorded by Heal at the White Swan in St. Paul's Churchyard until Woster's death in 1736 (see: Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660 - 1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 205)

A very similar bureau from the Collection of the Earl Poulett at Hinton House, Somerset, was sold in these Rooms, 26 June 1986, lot 97. Another from the same source was sold Sotheby's, 1 November 1968, lot 30
