Lot Essay

Although Hurt's Highland scenes with cattle are familiar, this one is unusual in having a snow setting; indeed it seems to be his only known picture of this type. A view of Glencoe, it was no doubt painted to order for his American client, Mr John J. White of Pittsburgh, who may have been an expatriate Scot.
