The composition of this group derives from Canova's Naiad, known both in marble and plaster. However, a more specific comparison may be drawn with Pietro Tenerani's marble Cupid drawing a rose thorn from Venus's foot, circa 1819, at Chatsworth. It is interesting to note that Tenerani was commissioned to produce bronze reductions of some of his work for the Danish Prince Christian Frederick. These were cast in Rome by Jollage and Hopfgarten from models by Hermann Ernst Freund and Pietro Galli, and the present bronze may be related to this production.
