Lot Essay

Gilbert's renowned figure of Victory was cast in several sizes, and was usually mounted on onyx or coloured marble spheres, and on elaborate bronze bases. The small size and 'precious' quality of the Victory made it an ideal present, which Gilbert enjoyed giving to his friends such as John Singer Sargent and Henry Irving.
