Lot Essay

A design for a Blenheim Palace passageway, in the Huntington Library (63.52.258A), also includes seven upright wall panels and has three ceiling medallions, inscr. Zephyrus & Flora/Boreas & Orythia/Bacch: & Ariadne. This design differs from the Huntington drawing in many respects, but the depiction of Boreas and Orythia is similar. This design may have been a preliminary proposal for Blenheim, for which the artist made some measured diagrams and sketches in his Sketchbook (British Museum 1884-7-26-40, ff. 50r., 50v.) [see Croft-Murray I, p.266 (3)]. These diagrams and sketches refer to two Passages (each 44ft. x 10ft.), but only one of these, the east-west passage, was constructed. The present design was probably made before the Passageway had been built
