Ince Catalogue, 1803, p.264, no.CXCI, 'The Alchymist is here represented in his elaboratory, holding a book in his hand, and busy in his chymical experiments. This was a noted picture in Holland for many years, being painted by Teniers, who introduces into it a great variety of objects with great minuteness, as he does in many others of his paintings. There are two different engravings taken from it'
