Lot Essay

A bozzetto for Pozzi's altarpiece now in the left transept of the Church of San Francesca Romana in the Roman Forum. Executed shortly before 1739, this was painted for the Olivetans, of whom Bernardo Tolomei of Siena (1272-1348) was the founder, for their monastery of Monte Morcino in Perugia (see O. Michel and P. Rosenberg, catalogue of the exhibition, Subleyras, Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, and Villa Medici, Rome, 1987, pp.100-1 and 285, fig.1); there two altarpieces by Pozzi hung with two by his exact contemporary Subleyras.

Another sketch is in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Palazzo Barberini, Rome (S. Rudolph, La pittura del '700 a Roma, 1983, pl.587); that picture, which measures 63 x 37.3cm., would seem to postdate the present study as it corresponds more closely with the altarpiece, notably in showing the arched top of the finished
painting
