Lot Essay

This candelabrum relates closely to caryatid bronze candelabra on black marble bases with festooned bucrania, designed in 1806 by the Swiss founder Benjamin Vulliamy (1747-1821) for George, Prince of Wales, later George IV, for Carlton House, London (see: J. Harris, Buckingham Palace, London, 1968, p. 156). Designed with festive bacchic ornament in the French Grecian manner, popularised by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807. The black drum, embellished with a hairy satyr-mask wreathed with vines, supports an acanthus calix which is inspired by the Barberini candelabrum engraved in C.H. Tatham, Ornamental Architecture, London, 1799
