Lot Essay

The design for this commode appears to derive from a dressing-commode by Sheraton in his Appendix, London, 1802, pl. XX and LXVI. A very similar commode, with panted decoration, possibly by the same maker, in the Victorian & Albert Museum is illustrated R. Fastnedge, Sheraton Furniture, Glasgow, 1962, pl. D, facing page 54. Another, similar, the property of the late Mrs. Robert Tritton, Godmersham Park, Kent, was sold Christie's house sale 6-9 June 1983, lot 57
