J. Richardson Jun. (L.2170) his mount with attribution 'Carlo Maratti' (recto) and inscription (L. 2997) 'For the St Gregory the Great, in the Immaculate Conception, in the Chappel of Card. Alderano Cibo, in the Madonna del Popolo'
Perhaps related to the head of Saint Gregory, in the Immaculate Conception with Saint Gregory, Saint Chrysostom, Saint John and Saint
Augustine in the Cappella Cybo in Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome. The altarpiece was executed in 1685-6 and its gestation is documented by a remarkable series of drawings. Six composition studies are recorded by A. F. Blunt and H. L. Cooke, The Roman Drawings at Windsor Castle, London 1960 under no. 286. Another study for the head of Saint Gregory is in the British Museum and the whole figure was in the collection of Sir John Pope-Hennessy
