Lot Essay

Professor Knox has kindly endorsed the attribution, and suggests that this study dates from the 1740s. Although more restrained in handling than many of the drawings from the sole figure per soffitti album Professor Knox compares this study to a sheet sold at Sotheby's, 5 December 1977, lot 17. In style this drawing is similar to studies, presumably related to projects for ceilings, from the Marquis de Biron's collection now in the Metropolitan, J. Bean and B. Griswold, 18th Century Italian Drawings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1990, nos. 208-10, 212-8
