Lot Essay

No immediate analogies feature in the standard literature on ornamental bronze castings, although the shape of the back-plate is an inversion of the standard 'lyre' form of 16th and 17th Century Venetian knockers. The inclusion of the image of St Paul presumably refers to the name of a family or parish, but its combination with a secular figure of a mermaid makes it unlikely that it was for a religious edifice.
