Lot Essay

Cf. D.Howard and J.Ayers, op. cit., vol.I, pp.118-119, pl.94 and 95 for two similar dishes and a discussion on this series of armorial dishes bearing the arms of the provinces and cities of the Netherlands and France and England, made to Dutch order. At least twenty-three different arms are recorded. A dish with the arms of Zutphen is illustrated by D.F.Lunsingh Scheurleer op. cit., p.128, colour plate G, and one with the arms of 'Luxenburgh' in M.Beurdeley, op. cit., p.157, cat.39. Cf.also C.Le Corbeiller, op. cit., pp.38-39 where a Dutch delftware copy with the arms of Engelandt is illustrated, from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
