Lot Essay

A number of tile panels from this complex are in public and private collections. There is a large panel in the Victoria & Albert Museum, and panels of four in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the David Collection, Copenhagen, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam amongst others.

These tiles must have been made up from the fragments left after the intact tiles had been removed. Each is made up using no new pieces from a mosaic of fragments, each fragment occupying its appropiate place in the composition and cut to fit its neighbouring pieces as accurately as possible, an enormously laborious process.
