Lot Essay

Portrayals of buildings on Kutahya pottery are rare, but examples are found in the Benaki Museum, Athens and in tiles now in the Etchmiadzin chapel in the Cathedral of St. James, Jerusalem. The church design here is sufficiently detailed that the artist seems to be depicting an actual building, probably the seat of the Catholicos in Etchmiadzin, with which it shares many features.

An unusual feature is the hole drilled in the centre, which is original. It would implies that the tile was designed to be part of a wooden, metal or stone construction; one where plaster would not have been an appropriate medium for adhesion
