Lot Essay
Regarded as the greatest work of Petr Ivanov (dates unknown); he studied at the Academy of Arts from 1809 and worked at the Military Press in the 1830's-50's. He was the author of numerous lithographs of views and portraits as well as illustrations to literary works. Of I. Ivanov little is recorded save that he produced this panorama. Sadovnikov was a self-taught serf belonging to Princess N.P. Golitsyna who was renowned for his topographical views of St. Petersburg and its surroundings drawn between 1830 and 1850, and for these panoramas. He was also known for his interior decorations of some of the capital's palaces. The whole panorama was reprinted in an album in Leningrad in 1974
