Lot Essay

Renoir had spent many months staying with Paul Bérard and his family at their chateau in Wargemont, near Dieppe, in the 1880s and he returned to the Normandy countryside frequently in later years. In the 1890s, when this work was painted, the Renoirs regularly rented a small farmhouse near Wargemont which Oscar Wilde later used as a winter retreat.
