Lot Essay

INDENTColonel Augustus William Morris, C.B. (1845-1906), entered the 58th Regiment as Ensign, 1864; Lieutenant 1869, Captain 1878; during the Zulu war of 1879, he was present with the 2nd battalion of his regiment at the battle of Ulundi, 4th July; he served with two companies of the 2nd battalion in the battle of Majuba Hill during the 1st Boer War, 1881 (severely wounded; Mentioned in Despatches); his version of the death of General Colley during the engagement, is the most acceptable account of that controversial affair (The First Boer War by Lehman refers); Major 1881, Lieut. Colonel 1890; commanded the 1st battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, 1890-94; he served during the South African War, 1899-1901 as Assistant Adjutant General, 5th Division and as Commandant at Durban; on Spion Kop, 24th January, 1900, was atttached to Major General Coke's staff and at 8 p.m. conveyed personally to Major General Warren details of the critical situation on the hill, these harsh details were almost immediately confirmed by a Lieutenant Winston Churchill, (The Times History of the War in South Africa refers); he subesquently commanded the Melmoth Field Force which operated in front of Eshowe, thus securing the Zulu Border; (C.B., 1900; Mentioned in Despatches) Colonel Morris retired from active service December, 1902
