INDENTLieutenant Colonel Arthur Townley Butler, C.M.G. (1867-1948) entered the Royal Artillery as Lieutenant, 1886; Captain 1896, Major 1901; during the South African War served as Adjutant 2nd Cavalry Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery, November 1899 to June 1900; was present at various actions including those at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, the Vet and the Zand rivers and the engagements near Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill; served in the Transvaal, July 1900 to May 1902 (Mentioned in Despatches); accompanied the 1st Expeditionary Force to France, 1914, served there and in Belgium until November 1917 and again from May to June 1918 (Wounded; C.M.G., 1915; Mentioned in Despatches four times including Sir John French's Despatches for the Aisne of 8th October 1914 and again in his Ypres to Armentiéres Despatch of 14th January 1915 -- The Old Contemptibles Honours and Awards refers)
