INDENTLieutenant Colonel Frederick George William Draften, D.S.O., born 1880; entered the Scottish Rifles as Second Lieutenant from the Militia, 1899; Lieutenant 1901; served in the South African War, 1899-1901 and took part in the relief of Ladysmith, the action at Colenso and was wounded at Spion Kop; was present in Natal, May to June, 1900 which included the action at Laing's Nek and took part in various operations in the Transvaal, 1900-01; Captain 1910; Adjutant, Territorial Force 1912; during the Great War, he served in France and Belgium variously from March 1915 to 9th May 1918 when he was listed as 'Missing'; reported as being a Prisoner of War and was repatriated 1st December, 1918; during the course of the war he commanded the 13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment and the 1st Battalion of his own regiment (wounded three times; D.S.O. London Gazette 1.1.1917. 'Major Temp. Lieut. Colonel, Scottish Rifles; Mentioned in Despatches twice); Lieutenant Colonel 1921 and retired the same year; was employed in the War Office during the 1939-45 war as a Retired Officer (M.B.E. London Gazette 4.1.1943)
