Lot Essay

INDENTPrivate W. Farnden who acted as batman to Lieutenant Levett from late 1916 is mentioned frequently in the officer's letters '... he has been out here ever since August 1914 and has been like an elder brother to me ... send him some cocoa, biscuits, socks or anything you can spare ... when we go into the trenches he has to stick to me (March 1) '... we have just had dinner cooked by Farndon on a brazier and we push off at midnight (March 9)'. Lieutenant Levett was killed at about 5.20 a.m. the following morning by our own barrage during the taking of Loupart Wood near Irles, France. Private Farnden was awarded the M.M. probably for this action (London Gazette 1.8.1917)
