INDENTGeneral Sir John Davis K.C.B. (1832-1901), entered the 35th Regiment, 1852; Lieutenant 1854; served in the Indian Mutiny with his regiment in the Shahabad district, 1858-59; Captain 1859, Major 1860, Lieut. Colonel 1868, Colonel 1873, Major General 1883; accompanied the Sudan expedition under Sir Gerald Graham, 1884, and commanded the 2nd Infantry Brigade; was present in the engagements at El-Teb and Tamaai (C.B.; Mentioned in Despatches several times); also present in the Sudan campaign at Suakin, 1885; retired 1891 with rank of Lieut. General; General 1896 (K.C.B., 1898); became Colonel, Royal Sussex Regiment, 1900
