INDENTThe close ties between the ruling houses of Egypt and Zanzibar were particularly significant during the late 19th century. The Sultan of Zanzibar was a distinguished Arab ruler who did not owe alliegance to the Ottoman Empire. Although Abbas II openly showed his loyalty to the Porte at Constantinople, Egypt was never comfortable under Ottoman suzerainty.
