Bar to D.S.O. London Gazette 26.7.1918. Major and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel (Temporary Brigadier General), Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the situation required the closest handling of the brigades, he commanded his in a most skilful and fearless manner during a daylight retirement, having his horse shot under him by rifle fire. His brigade rendered conspicuous service and came out of a severe battle with its morale undiminished, for which his example and leadership were much responsible."

Major General Sir John "Jock" Kennedy, G.B.E., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O. (1878-1948), entered the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as a Second Lieutenant, 1898; seconded for service with the Egyptian Army, 1909-14; Major 1915; served during the Great War, 1914-18 in France and Belgium (wounded twice; Mentioned in Despatches six times; Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, 1917 and Brevet Colonel, 1918; C.M.G.); commanded both the 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, 1916 and was appointed to command the 26th (Highland) Brigade the following year; Inspector of Infantry, 1918; commanded the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment, 1923, the 19th Indian Infantry Brigade, 1926 and the 44th (Home Counties) Division, Territorial Army, 1932; Major General 1931 (C.B. 1932); appointed to the command of the 1st Division, 1934 and to the Colonelcy of the East Kent Regiment, 1937 (K.B.E. 1937; Order of the Dannebrog on the occasion of King Christian X's visit to England, 1937); Vice-Chairman, Executive Committee of Red Cross and St. John, War Organisation, 1939-47 (G.B.E. 1946; Royal Order of George I in recognition of outstanding services to Greece during the war awarded by decree, 29.3.1947.; Order of Orange Nassau awarded by decree, 13.2.1947.; Order of St. Olav bestowed by King Haakon for Red Cross service; Swedish Gold Medal of Prince Carl for distinguished "humanitarian" service, 1946); Lieutenant of the Tower of London, 1945-48
