Lot Essay

This is a design for a page heading reproduced in the Belgian review, Music, edited by E.L.T. Mesens. It appeared on p.8 of the issue dated Noel 1926. Magritte made five such headings and these were published, with Magritte's name printed beneath each one, in various issues published between October 1926 and January 1927. As in the case of Magritte's other papiers collés of the period, the pasted paper elements are taken from the piano score of The Girls of Gottenburg.
We are grateful to Sarah Whitfield, co-author of the René Magritte Catalogue Raisonné (ed. David Sylvester), for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry. To be included in the forthcoming volume V of the René Magritte catalogue Raisonné currently being prepared by Sarah Whitfield and David Sylvester.
