4° (203 x 140mm). Titles printed in red and black, some chapter headings printed in red. 16 full-page woodcut illustrations and final leaf with woodcut device. (Without the preliminaries to parts II and III as usual; a6*3 misbound; neat repairs to Ff4, Gg1, Kk3, Tt3, KK1, LL3 and 4; small worm-track in blank margin of leaves Bb1 to the end.) Modern light brown morocco gilt.

FIRST EDITION OF THE SYRIAC NEW TESTAMENT AND THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN SYRIAC with type prepared by Guillaume Postel after the handwriting of the Syrian priest Moses of Mardin, the assistant to J.M.Widmanstädt. 1000 copies were printed: 500 were retained for use in Europe, 300 were intended for the Patriarch of Antioch and the Maronite Patriarch, and the remaining 200 were given to Moses to take back to Mardin. This is the first issue, with the first four lines of the Syriac title printed in red with with vowel points in black. Adams B-1797; Darlow & Moule 8947-8948.
