2° (268 x 202mm). Mounted on guards throughout. Engraved title, 46 etched and engraved plans, elevations and views on 34 double-page plates by Jacques Callot. Woodcut initials and head-pieces, woodcut printers device at end. 18th-century calf, spine gilt (joints weak, spine chipped at head and foot). Provenance: Alexander B. McGrigor (armorial bookplate).

Second edition of this rare work, and the first edition with the Callot plates. The first edition was published in 1609 in Rome with plates by Antoine Tempesta. The second edition was commissioned by Cosimo II de' Medici, the engraved title incorporating his arms. Callot was employed to rework the Tempesta's plates, which had been based on Amico's drawings, and also added nine new plans. Bernardino Amico was Prior of the Franciscan Order in Jerusalem from 1596-1601. Many of the buildings that he sketched are now long since lost.
