MOLL, Herman [The World described: or, a new and correct sett of maps. London: J. and T. Bowles, maps dated 1708-20.]
2° (660 x 540mm). 26 double-page engraved maps only (of 30, lacking the maps of France, upper Italy, Rhine and Baltic), each hand-coloured in outline, 3 additional maps inserted including a map of the Rhine, and a plan of Dantzick. (Lacking the list of maps, many maps cleanly torn at margins or along centre folds, several with neat old repairs, occasional very light browning, small wormhole at head of guards just affecting maps). Contemporary calf (worn, leather on lower cover torn).
This, Moll's foremost atlas of the world, was first issued circa 1717 with 25 maps; later issues included up to 5 additional maps and the atlas was certainly still for sale as late as 1733. The large clearly and carefully drawn maps set new standards for British engraving and cartography; the maps include two world maps, one folding, and 4 of America. NMM 398; Phillips 554.
