VENICE - Antonio Canal called CANALETTO and Giambattista BRUSTOLON (1712-1796). [Le Feste Ducali. Venice]: Ludovico Furlanetto, [1766-1768]

A series of 12 etched plates by Brustolon after Canaletto illustrating various processions and ceremonies of the Doge in Venice, the plates unbound, etched image 440 x 560mm., paper size varying from 550 x 725mm to 530 x 720mm; together with 7 other maps and plates, including two views of Siena.

An exceptionally rare series of etchings by Brustolon, seldom seen complete illustrating various ceremonies and processions of the Doge. This series is the first edition second state, issued from May 1766 to 1768. Brustolon issued the first 8 plates in March 1766, which sold out very quickly. This initial success encouraged him to add a further 4 plates to the series, and were still available in Furlanetto's catalogue in 1779. A second edition of the plates was issued by Viero and a third edition printed in the early 19th century. Cf. Da Carlevarijs al Tiepolo, exhibition 1983, nos 59-66. (19)
