A fine unsophisticated copy. First edition of the text, with Guillaume Philander's annotations, to be printed in France. The illustrations by Bernard Salomon are in this edition subordinate to the general layout of the book: its importance lies in the typography (incorporating de Tournes beautiful initials) and the accuracy of the text. The first edition edited by Philander was published in Rome in 1544. Fowler 406; Berlin Kat. 1813; Cicognara 712.
