Provenance: Viscount Mersey (collection stamps). Napoleon had demanded that Talleyrand be sent to Constantinople as ambassador to obtain the Sultan's agreement to the occupation of Egypt, but Talleyrand had in fact contrived to avoid going there. The letter, which was intercepted, is dated three weeks after Nelson's victory at the battle of the Nile, hence Captain Hope's comment on it. (4)
